A Preliminary Study of Compliance and Satisfaction to Headache Diary in the Patients with Migraine

Abstract
Background: A headache diary is a tool to evaluate the burden and therapeutic effect in the patients with migraine, but studies regarding the efficacy of a headache diary are rare in Korea.

Objective: To estimate the compliance of a headache diary, determine the factors that influence compliance, and evaluate patient¡¯s satisfaction.

Methods: The patients received the diary at the first visit along with an explanation on how to use it; they were recommended to return it at the second visit. The enrolled patients completed a questionnaire regarding the headache diary and their degree of satisfaction. If the participants failed to return the diary, the clinicians contacted them and checked for compliance. We evaluated the factors that influenced compliance to the headache diary.

Results: Thirteen patients (10 women; 76.9%), with a mean age of 43.6 years, were enrolled in this study. Seven of them (53.8%) had returned the diary 27.9¡¾4.1 days after the first visit, and 6 had not returned it. The main reason of failure to return the diary was loss to follow-up owing to improvement of pain (n=4), transfer to another facility (n=1), and personal reasons (n=1). There was no difference in age, gender, and initial headache profiles according to the compliance. The participants reported a high degree (96.4%) of satisfaction with the headache diary.

Conclusion: In this preliminary study, satisfaction to the headache diary was relatively high, but additional efforts are required to increase the rate of follow-up visit and return of diary.
